A full month into the new year and boy are we busy.  We have a lot planned for the next 5 months, both our own projects and supporting other projects near and dear to our hearts.

Later this month, February 24th,  is a fundraiser bowling event for the Field of Dreams project for Gloucester Twp.  This baseball field would be a state of the art facility that catered to the needs of mentally and physically disabled children and adults to give them a safe place to experience sports that they may not have been allowed to participate in.  The cost is $15 a person to bowl, get shoes, a slice of pizza and soda.

We are also getting ready to award $15,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors and are busy planning our reception.

Kiwanis One Day is on April 6th and we are planning out project to serve the community.

May is our busy month.  In addition to our 2 meetings, we are serving breakfast at the Ronald McDonald House in Camden.  The house is always full and it is an honor to serve breakfast and relieve families of the worry of planning and making meals.  On May 18th, is our annual Bowl-a-Thon for Cystic Fibrosis.  We are hoping to raise even more money to donate to this wonderful cause.

National Night Out 2012

For the second year, Gloucester Twp Blackwood Kiwanian Ruth Tracey, organized her block to party it up for National Night Out.  As a Kiwanian, she also found a way to raise funds for a new project in Gloucester Twp, the Field of Dreams.

National Night Out is America's night to promote a crime-free night of community entertainment.  The movement started to bring attention to anticrime efforts. Last year, funds were raised for a Nico's Army, to help a local boy and his family his battle with cancer.

This year Kiwanis members donated gift baskets and the community had the opportunity to purchase tickets to win one of these baskets.  Gloucestert Twp is trying to raise enough money to start the building of a "Field of Dreams." This field is specifically designed for  children with disabilities.  This field will be specially designed and built to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers, (in addition to other needs) and allow for a safe environment that  normal baseball and softball fields would not allow for children with disabilities.

During the basket raffle, Kiwanians raised over $200 in 3 hours to help in this noble cause.  This project has his a soft spot with our members and we hope to continue in this journey.

Once again National Night Out has been a success!  View pictures of National Night Out 2012 on the photos page

2012 International Convention Update

This year Kiwanis International Convention was in New Orleans, Louisiana.  The food was great, the hospitality was great, and the weather was HUMID.  Nonetheless, 2012 convention was a great experience.  There were tons of great workshops and social events that reminded me why it is so awesome to be a Kiwanian.

The Touhy's, the real life family from the movie, "The Blind Side" were the keynote speakers for opening ceremonies.  They spoke of how giving just one person a chance, you can change a life.  The Touhy's were comical but let the Kiwanis family audience know that our work is not in vain.

In addition to the workshops and service projects that were going on at the convention, came the highly anticipated House of Delegates in which Kiwanians would be voting on multiple proposals, including the proposed dues increas, and electing a new International Vice President and new Trustees.   The dues proposal was sent back to the board for review and will most likely be brought back up next year.  Dr. John Button out of the Eastern Canada- Carribean district.

Next year's international convention is in Vancouver.  Check out the 2013 Convention website http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/vancouver-convention/home.aspx.
